The year is drawing to a close and it’s time to look back at 2015 and take stock of what the year has meant for Área Oftalmológica Avanzada (AOA). 2015 was a very positive year: the clinic incorporated new technology, new treatments and also improved patient care, both directly (in the office, on the phone and through polite, personalized, professional dealings with our team) and indirectly, providing specific ophthalmological information on open debate forums on the AOA website, which are available to patients to help them answer any questions they may have.
Comprehensive treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome, a commitment for 2015 and 2016
This year, Área Oftalmológica Avanzada has focused its efforts on creating and offering comprehensive treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome. To do so, this Unit received new technology to diagnose the condition, including a device to analyze the tear film lipid layer and one to detect nerve fibers. However the real revolution came with IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment, which is fast and painless.
By flashing light onto the patient’s eyelids, IPL stimulates blood flow to the area and activates the nerve endings that surround the meibomian glands to produce the oil tears need, the lack of which causes the irritation characteristic of Dry Eye.
Nutrition, key factor in eye conditions
Another of the most noteworthy aspects of 2015 has been our growing awareness of how important nutrition is to good eye health. Although it was already widely known that vitamin D deficiency and the imbalance of certain nutritional factors play an important role in eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, now we also know how to study and, above all, improve nutritional issues to help advance eye treatment.
In view of this situation, Área Oftalmológica Avanzada is committed to the combination of nutrition and ophthalmology, bringing a nutritionist that specializes in eye conditions onto our team to help improve our patients’ eye health and prevent or curb the effects of eye diseases.
2015, a year of new ophthalmological treatments
2015 has also been a year of news in the field of ophthalmology, which AOA has incorporated with the aim of improving patient care and making treatments more effective. Of these, leaving Dry Eye Syndrome aside, the most noteworthy are those related to the retina and cataracts.
The retina is one of the areas that have evolved most this year, incorporating new treatments for inflammation inside the eye. Devices that allow for sustained release of nanoparticles have been a giant leap forward in Uveitis and Retinitis, which are increasingly common and often lead to serious vision loss. In the area of macular degeneration, a decisive improvement has come in the form of new telescopic intraocular lenses, which can be implanted into the eye permanently, improving central vision to make it easier to read.
The new cataract-diagnosis systems, OCT, optical aberrations and crystalline densitometry, are worth noting as they are key in deciding when to operate and, above all, which type of intraocular lens is best for each patient.
Satisfied and proud of the ground we’ve covered in 2015, in 2016 here at AOA we hope to continue offering patients the best care and best ophthalmological solutions to meet their medical needs and high standards. Área Oftalmológica Avanzada wishes you happy holidays.
